Dental Emergencies: When You Need to See a Dentist Immediately

Dr. Moga Cătălin

What Is a Dental Emergency?

A dental emergency is any situation requiring immediate dental intervention to stop bleeding, relieve severe pain, or save a tooth. It's important to know the difference between a dental problem that can wait for a regular appointment and one that requires quick intervention.

Situations That Require Emergency Care

  • Avulsed (completely knocked out) tooth — a permanent tooth that falls out can be reimplanted if you act quickly. Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently with milk or saline, and try to reposition it in the socket. If you can't, keep it in milk and see a dentist within 30 minutes.
  • Severe pain with swelling — may indicate a dental abscess (infection), which can become dangerous if it spreads.
  • Bleeding that won't stop — after an extraction or trauma, persistent bleeding requires intervention.
  • Tooth fracture with nerve exposure — intense pain and extreme sensitivity indicate the tooth nerve is exposed.
  • Difficulty opening the mouth or swallowing — may indicate a spreading infection requiring immediate treatment.

What Can You Do Until You Reach the Dentist?

  • For pain: take ibuprofen as directed
  • For swelling: apply a cold compress to the cheek, 15 minutes on, 15 minutes off
  • For bleeding: bite on a damp gauze pad for 20 minutes
  • For a broken tooth: save the fragment and avoid chewing on the affected side
