Toothache: Causes, Treatment and When to See a Dentist

Dr. Moga Cătălin

Why Does Your Tooth Hurt?

Toothache is one of the most common reasons patients visit the dental office. The causes can range from minor issues to serious conditions that require urgent treatment.

Most Common Causes of Dental Pain

  • Tooth decay — the most common cause. When decay reaches the tooth nerve, the pain becomes intense and persistent.
  • Dental pulp infection — occurs when bacteria reach the inside of the tooth, causing inflammation and severe pain.
  • Periodontal disease — inflammation of the gums and supporting bone can cause diffuse pain and sensitivity.
  • Cracked or fractured tooth — micro-cracks can cause sharp pain when chewing.
  • Wisdom tooth eruption — can cause pain, swelling, and difficulty opening the mouth.

What Can You Do at Home for Temporary Relief?

Until you can see your dentist, you can try some temporary remedies:

  • Rinsing your mouth with warm salt water (one teaspoon of salt per glass of water)
  • Applying a cold compress to your cheek near the painful area for 15 minutes
  • Taking an analgesic (ibuprofen or paracetamol) as directed
  • Avoiding very cold, hot, or sweet foods

Important: These remedies are temporary. Do not delay your dentist visit, as untreated toothache can worsen significantly.

When Should You See a Dentist Urgently?

Seek emergency dental care if you have:

  • Severe pain that doesn't respond to painkillers
  • Swelling of the face or neck
  • Fever associated with dental pain
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing
  • Bleeding that won't stop
